The Place I Want to Get Back To ~Mary Oliver

The Place I Want to Get Back To

pine forest

is where
in the pinewoods
in the moments between
the darkness

and first light
two deer
came walking down the hill
and when they saw me

they said to each other, okay,
this one is okay,
let’s see who she is
and why she is sitting

on the ground, like that,
so quiet, as if
asleep, or in a dream,
but, anyway, harmless;

and so they come
on their slender legs
and gazed upon me
not unlike the way

I go out to the dunes and look
and look and look
into the faces of the flowers;
and then one of them leaned forward

and nuzzled my hand, and what can my life
bring me that could exceed
that brief moment?
For twenty years

I have gone every day to the same woods,
not waiting, exactly, just lingering.
Such gifts, bestowed,
can’t be repeated.

If you want to talk about this
come to visit.  I live in the house
near the corner, which I have named
Gratitude.

Beautiful, and especially the ending, “I live in the house near the corner, which I have named Gratitude.”

    Inspiring.

    Thank you Vered,
I start everyday with a poem, It just helps me think in possibilities and I am especially fond of Mary Oliver.

I was attempting to write a poem for my Valentine post, but just could not muster – so thought I would share one of my favorites – gratitude just seems to open my heart to love and serving life.

Hmmn, moments like that, eh, can we recapture them or wait for another to come along? I think there will always be such moments but we have to be open to them.

Patricia, what a wonderful poem! Deer are one of my favourite creatures. They are so majestic and sacred in some way. And that’s a great idea you have, to start each day with a poem.

    Davina,
I wish the deer would let me enjoy my roses before they eat all the buds off, and not getting any green beans was a bit sobering this past year…I think we need a few less in our yard! Two new babies showed up last week…I melted…

I just couldn’t make it without my poem in the morning getting stuck in my head and creating thoughts all day

    Thank you for coming by
