Factoid Friday: Architects

  • An architect is a licensed individual who leads a design team in the planning and design of buildings and participates in oversight of building construction. The word “architect” comes from Latin architectus, which in turn derives from Greek arkhitekton (arkhi, chief + tekton, builder”). In its broadest sense, an architect is a person who translates a user’s requirements into a built environment. (Wikipeida)
  • Architects must frequently make professional decisions that affect the safety and well being of the general public. Architects are required to obtain specialized education and experience to obtain a license to practice architecture, similar to the requirements for other professionals. The requirements for practice vary from place to place.(Wikipedia)
  • More than 83,500 licensed architects and associated professionals are members of the AIA. AIA members adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct that assures clients, the public, and colleagues of an architect’s dedication to the highest standards in professional practice.
  • AIA stands for American Institute of Aarchitects
  • The Northwest Regional Conference for Architects is being held in Honolulu, Hawaii October 7-11, 2008. Last year the Conference was held in Spokane, Washington and the year before in Hong Kong. Eugene, Oregon and Japan will provide sites for the next several meetings.
  • The Northwest Regional Conference of the AIA included Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea.
  • The Regional Conferences are organized by volunteers within the Chapter with assistance from the National AIA for education credits and continuing educational credits awarded.
  • There is a tremendous shortage of Architects in this region. Many younger Architectural students are not completing the licensing exams. The exams are rigorous.
  • Visiting the websites of Architectural Firms is a lesson in beauty and a stunning way to spend a day reading, studying and learning something new about communities and intentions.
  • An Architect is an extremely powerful member of any community from the foundation to the sky.

Hi Patricia – I’d never really thought about the huge amount of responsibility that architects have to the general public until I read this. I guess it’s a pretty important job.
