PTSD Part 3:  Who Do You Trust?  Let’s Revive The Old Game Show

No let’s not revive the game show and just get on with the discussion. Let’s talk about healing this wound whether it is simple or complex.

The number one tool or fuel for healing a moral – psychological wound is SLEEP.  Yep!  That is just what I said Sleep, getting the zzzzz’s and for at least 8.3 hours at a time.  That’s what all the research shows and all the neurological physicians and psychologists say particularly if they are healing from strokes.

I reference Dr. Shay who is a neurological cell researcher who had a stroke and then Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor in her book My Stroke of Insight.

Oh my, if you have received a psychological wound your first response is vigilance, maybe we could call it anxiety, and then withdrawal which might feel more like the word depression.  So now you are suffering from insomnia and depression and nothing anyone says to you can get you any sleep and they are a little worried by the depression so they are not sure you should go to sleep.  Now you have shut down all emotions, which don’t serve survival and you are wide awake and you start taking things to assist you in going to sleep.

What you really need to do is talk to someone who is ethical and competent and the two of you begin to figure out and identify the primary wound.  You are going to have to re-establish social trust and for many, many of us that is not our community, or church or buddies it goes back to MOM. (It could very well be a teacher or Dad or Grandfather – whoever instilled in you those one on one skills, those emotional power tools and original trust.)

You may need to talk to someone who is ethical and competent who can prescribe the right medications to assist your recovery. Your body may well be in the act too with other illnesses and problems adding to the distractions and the dimensions of recovery.

Individuals often get stuck trying to skip steps and not tell anyone and sometimes when they do tell someone they don’t know how to direct them in the correct healing path.  If we are exhausted, fired up, and stuck we will hang on to anything that helps, such as sleeping pills, drugs or alcohol, dancing until you are overwhelmed, yelling at family members, spanking the kids, that guy yelling at me at a church, and phrases like, “my family has always lived in Tennessee and always voted Democratic,” or “I was never any good at Math, I have Math anxiety,” and the ever popular one “what would Jesus do?’  I am sure you could name a few more.

I can tell you that these are all stuck places. You have to do the work of finding the primary injury and then working through the steps of healing.

Now who do you trust and how do you heal if the moral psychic wound is to your whole country and the attack is on your financial institutions, your military –security power house, and the leadership of your country?  How do you heal if the company that promised you a pension and health insurance for life breaks its promise?  How do you heal a wound of finally buying a family home only to lose it in a boon-doggle scheme?   How do you heal a whole country?

    Hi Patricia – You’re so right. When you’re ill already – lack of sleep makes it feel ten times worse.

    With regards to medication, I would also add that if it does give you upset stomach, dizzyness etc, try to persevere for a few days as the side effects sometimes diminish by then. Also, don’t just stop taking your medication if it’s not right for you – go back and ask for something different. I only learned these things through my own mistakes.

    You ask how you heal a whole country? I would say that it’s nobody’s responsibility to heal that many people. I think each individual has to learn to heal themselves, hopefully with support from their family, friends, employers and colleagues.

    One thing I found useful was to stop focusing on the disease and trying to get well and motivate myself towards positive things instead. I know this sounds easier said than done, but it does help.

    I am delighted to find your comments today and they are once again marvelous and helpful

    I think people always heal themselves but one on one care is really the very best solution. And good support and good friends also really keep the progress coming along.

    The country will heal itself one person at a time, but getting more information out and about will certainly aide in recovery

    Thank you for the comments and once again your clarity and precision with words.
    I remember when Jello became a 5 minute project and not a 30 minute experience, I thought what would happen if everything became so sweet, and colorful and fast firming. I often say to my clients we aren’t making jello here we are working through and chewing the fat of a big change in your life – this is going to take time, effort and some magic to complete.
