Scary School Supplies

The first news story I heard on Tuesday morning was about guns. Not just any old guns or ones that had been used to kill someone, this was a story about guns as school supplies. A town in Texas apparently is requiring all of its teachers to come to school with concealed weapons permits and hand guns. My mind just started racing and I could not stop thinking about all the ramifications of such a requirement.

What is going on in this Texas town that makes them so sure of this solution and fearful that they would need to arm all their teachers?

Are the Children of this town already armed and threatening? Does the town believe that terrorists are singling then out for an attack? Bonnie and Clyde are again on the loose? Is someone they believe to be a leader working everyone up to a heightened frenzy of fear? Why do they believe arming the teachers is the answer to their fears?

I asked a teacher at my weights class and her response was very thoughtful and she replied, “It is the strangers that wander onto campus and don’t pass through the office and the metal detectors that keep you always alert to protect the children. I am not sure arming teachers is the correct solution but life is scarier at school these days.”

The clerk at the tire center said that she thought it was men’s attitudes and how they were trained to strike first and ask questions later and “oh well” that’s just the way life is these days. “People just don’t want to learn new ways of doing things or make change, they just go for what seems easy.”

I would like to come up with a new list of ways to make children and teachers feel safer and make our world a safer place. I am asking for some suggestions, your ideas, and thoughts about how to make the world/my community a safer place and reduce the fear. I will start the list:

  • How about working on communications skills for everyone
  • Teaching about feelings/emotions and how to use them at every age
  • How to discuss and debate issues classes – practice sessions
  • Skills building in recognizing hype and manipulation

I am looking forward to your comments and suggestions:

I’m not sure what to add – but I agree that arming the teachers is NOT the answer.

    Hello Vered,
Thank you for your comments on my site and for your fun post on spicy chocolate. I just can’t get over this news story as I see all the back to school ads and think of the children in that town knowing there is a gun in every classroom. I think Dr. Rosenberg’s Nonviolent – Compassionate Communications workbooks and books would be a better choice for safety?

Whoa. Do you have this article? I know a few folks who would like to take a look at it.

    Quinn,
I do not have this article in hand, I heard it on NPR radio at least 4 times on the day I wrote the post. I am sure it is on KUOW.org and NPR.org in their archives. Several of my friends said they heard it on the television news. Hope that helps. I can hardly get the story out of my mind.

Quinn – this story was all over the news a while ago. If you Google guns school and Texas you will come up with a ton of articles. The link to the one published by the New York times is:
