I need some assistance in the following areas:

I need some referrals to Wise Ears, my professional listening services site

I need some guest posts on some other blogs

I need some newsletter sign up folks on Wise Ears

AND,

I very much need some folks to join me on the Wise Ears Facebook page.

Basically, I need to get the word out about my professional services. I need to build a network with active referrals.

I have been giving away lots of free listening services, but my reach is not wide enough.

I am on SKYPE now so have extended my reach and range.

I have been getting testimonials from clients, but no one is coming by to read them.

I have taken several “how to” classes, I have taken two marketing classes, I am working with my SEO keywords instructions.

I have my copy of PROBLOGGER right beside me.

I have had 2 very successful coaching bloggers review my Wise Ears site and they both feel if I can get the word out, I will need to hire staff within a year.

I am commenting on lots of blogs and often on Facebook….but I am not getting tweeted, shared, linked, stumbled, dug, or passed on to any other social media sites.

AND

The strongest referral that I can receive is if folks think and share by word of mouth.

Both of the people who evaluated my blog wanted me to hire SEO writers and folks who do marketing. I do not have enough funds YET to do that.

Will you give me a helping hand as I get started? Do you have any other creative ideas for sharing the good news? Would you like a free session to make your own evaluation? Thank you, I am grateful for your assistance.

Looking forward to your suggestions and comments.

I would like it if you would share this post too. Share Button is below. Thank you

Deborah Baker at Living Between the Lines just passed on a sweet treat and what a delicious way to start out the New Year and the Valentine Month of February. I am the recipient of the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award. Lucky me!

At first I was not quite sure about this honor, because I have been busy returning to my NO SUGAR campaign, which I vacationed from during the past holiday season. Then I thought, no indeed, this is a good way to receive a sweet morsel, which only serves to remind me that connections with others is one of the sweetest treats one may receive. I just wish to say the stickiest of thank yous to Deborah for her thoughtful gift.

Now I am to indulge myself in the pure delight of talking about myself….here are 7 individually wrapped nuggets about me you may not have known.

#1 I am allergic to chocolate, dairy products, and caffeine. Remembering that chocolate contains caffeine, if I mix the various allergens together, I get a migraine headache which lasts for about 8 hours.

My health is an extremely important factor in my life because I was born with cancer and because my Father made me promise I would learn as much as I could about environmental cancers. If you spend much time with me, you will realize that I will talk about health issues #1 and I feel healthier and healthier as I debrief all the information that comes to me from other sources.

#2 I have watched the movie Julie and Julia 62 times. Why you ask? Because Meryl Streep is brilliant in it, Julia Child’s cooking show was the only program I was allowed to watch when I was healing from surgery or came home from school sick, and because it is about a blogger who succeeds in her hoped for arena of success. It inspires me.

#3 I was blessed with incredibly beautiful skin, and when other’s teased me about how clearly you could see veins through it, I knew immediately they were envious. I take very good care of my skin and never take it for granted and I am grateful for its power to hold me together. I rarely cover up the red patch on my forehead, because I believe to be a beacon of wisdom and a direct receptor to my heart.

#4 I used to think my greatest gift was my beautiful singing voice, but have learned that my greatest gift is listening and music is how I practice and improve that art form.

#5 Surveys – I enjoy taking them very much. I find them a powerful teaching tool, but I need to be able to voice my thoughts and not just answer yes, no and undecided. I no longer participate in surveys that do not allow me a place to comment.

#6 I totally dislike the smell of coffee.

#7 Working on a new dream. I have been taking lots of time to be healthy and wealthy enough to enjoy the last third of my life. I am very happy to say that I feel as though I have truly lived each and every day on purpose, with a few highs and lows to make it extremely interesting. Now as I am reaching out to touch the “peak of creativity” (around age 65 for women), I am developing a new dream and exploring possibilities. I can smell the sweet enticing smells of something awesome which is coming my way, and I will say it is irresistibly yummy!

I want to say thank you to Deborah for including me in this award. It was chewy and nutty and fun.

I also want to say thank you again to Eliza of Silver and Grace for including me in her free e book, Women Who Make a Difference and highlighting me on her blog December 2011.

Here are my nominees for this sweet treat, hope they will enjoy this award too:

2. Share 7 random facts about yourself.
3. Pass the Award on to some of your own deserving blog friends.

One of the interesting parts of the storm was by experiencing a power outage, I had to get out the crank up radio and listen to the local station. The media was quite busy working together and sharing the stories.

The local State College was expecting a big name Demographer, Dowell Myers, to arrive and give a lecture when the storm hit. This Social Scientist could not get to the campus so a station in Seattle hosted his lecture, sent it to those of us who were stranded and who had a radio.

Myers wanted to share with people about how the Census and population trends affect Democracy and specifically some interesting questions to consider when voting this year. It was a fascinating half hour of information sharing.

One question Myers asked,” Who is going to buy your house?”

This is a significant question because the vast majority of homeowners aged 50 and upwards are including their homes in part of their retirement planning and funding.

For 56% of us in the 50 and older age bracket, our homes are going to be purchased by the children of Immigrants living right now. These children will not be able to purchase our homes unless they have the equivalent educational background that we have when we purchased.

Will there be enough young adults with enough income to purchase our homes, even with diminished property values? How many are actually getting a college diploma? How many are dropping out of school at a young age?

If we want to keep our economy strong we need to send lots of funds to our schools, to employ the best teachers, and to figure out how we can be the most helpful and encouraging to the Immigrant population in our state. We need to educate like we give a DAM (that much volume and power) …. and as though our future depends on it, because it does.

Demography is the study of populations and cultures and they share lots of pertinent information with us. Many, many local communities are suffering already with a huge dropout rate. Schools are disenfranchising the immigrant community and also some of our brightest and best. If we do not keep our public schools in peak shape we are going to be in a very difficult situation.

It was a lot of information to take in, but important information to know and understand. There are a large number of candidates running this year, who would like to shut down public education and go to a “pay to play” system – or private schools. Some candidates wish to get rid of teachers unions and the government funding.

Most politicians right now are avoiding all the questions about immigration and who can vote and which groups to support and promote.

The Demographer’s final words were: “(This) State cannot afford a single high school dropout without it producing serious economic ramifications and devastating financial circumstances for those 50 and above.”

Just thought you might like to know.

So who is going to buy your house? Will most people not want to get into a house at all? How will we keep public schools going and make them competitive with private schools? What do we need to do for immigrants now?

Looking forward to hearing what you think:

42’ F clear skies and sunshine. We are getting a break in the storm for at least 12 hours and then 40 mph winds and about 3” of rain starting at midnight tonight. This is just the eye of the storm.

There remains lots of snow and ice on the ground, but this dry spell allows for the garbage pickup, shoveling time, schools to reopen, and storm drains to be cleared. There is plenty of preparation time for clearing fallen trees and opening the pathways for the coming rain to move on; opportunities to control the presumed and predicted flooding.

We got out the chain saw and took down the broken branches on the plum and crabapple trees. We hauled our neighbors redwood tree branches off the road way and moved the log sized ones away from our house. We have shoveled and cleared the drains. The stuck sump pump has been repaired.

We started the new year with spring like weather and so many clear, cold days of sunshine and bulbs poking up, I think people thought there would be no winter. That those predictions of heavy and wet days were not coming and true winter was about a week long in November, which was a month before the actual start. Mother Nature had other plans.

I spent 13 hours with no power in the midst of the snow and ice storm, watching and listening to the huge branches of that redwood tree break and fall towards my home. I could hear the falling limbs in the woods behind my house and it was frightening. As lovely as the snow falling looked, the driving ice was no bonus and I was concerned for our house and the solar panels – our safety and welfare.

I wrapped myself in blankets, put the pup on my lap and pulled on two sweaters over my long underwear and top. Long underwear and fleece right down to the 2 pair of socks and knit slippers. Just my nose and fingers felt the chill. I cranked up the radio and flashlight, and spent hours of my day light reading. I knew what to do about staying warm and safe, I was unsure about what to do to keep my house also safe.

The eye of the storm is only so long and with the other end just hours away, one hopes that folks know what to do and how to prepare. I do not think they practice anything but fire drills in schools anymore?

Over the years, I have begun to understand that there are lots of eyes in the storms of living. Many of these storms can be predicted and prepared for and still the eye is important to allow the unknowns to be cared for and recovered, before the next onslaught.

As the birds play on the wind and feast at the holly trees, this eye is giving me an opportunity to let go of the feelings of intense fear about the neighbor’s tree, it is providing time for me to think about what I want to say to them to create safety, and it is providing a vision of what needs to be done.

I am practicing letting go of fear and increasing my knowledge base and celebrating how thus far we have weathered the storm. I am counting my blessings which are numerous and collecting other’s stories of how they fared and what work they need to do ahead. I am filled with gratitude for all the moments of the storm and for our safe journey thus far and I am releasing the fear.

The eye of the storm is filled with sunshine so we can prepare for what is next to come. Do you celebrate the eye of the storm? What assists you in letting go of the fear? Do the storms of living help you to understand and grow? Do you have a story to share?

The folks at Patricia’s Wisdom invite you to come on over to Wise Ears and subscribe to our occasional newsletter or come by to share your story. We offer professional listening services and we grow by referral. Who’s hearing what you have to say?

NOTE: At the writing of the post, I still do not have an internet server. Many communications towers are down. I am sorry I am not able to reply to comments or even moderate some. I am accomplishing this post by putting it on a flash drive and heading off to a computer with servers working to get it to IT Girl and have it posted. There is considerable storm damage that is keeping things from being back to normal.

It is a snow day! Maybe this is nothing for you to note or write about, but here it is all about enjoying the wonder of the experience. As a child, it meant usually we had the day off from school, and we did not mind making it up in June, because a snow day was just so rare it was wonder full.

Not until my siblings took skiing lessons up the mountain did we have snowsuits, rather we just layered up and pulled on rain boots, mittens and hats. When we were so wet and frozen we could not hang out for one more minute, we came inside for warm cups of hot chocolate and often a toasty bath. If we lost power, then the fireplace was called into service and we played marathon rounds of board games in the flickering light.

The city often set aside streets for sledding, because everyone just stopped and enjoyed the experience.

And then the rain would come warm and wash it away and life would return to regular routines.

I probably had 10 Snow Days during my years in the public school system. (I spent my last two years of schooling in Cleveland, Ohio – no snow days there) My youngest child celebrates her birthday in February and she had 9 birthdays of snow days during her progress. One year my children were off from school for 18 days over the course of winter and they had to be made up in June.

One of my children lives in California now, and she is wishing that she was home for this Snow Day. Yes she loves to cross country ski and build snow folk in the yard, but I think it is also that sense of wonder and just raw joy that comes from deep inside. That rush to not waste a moment of this experience and feel it soak in right up to the knees.

There is something different this year. They can tell us that tomorrow will be the worst day of this storm. There are so many children who go to the mountains skiing every weekend, that snow at home is not so novel an experience. The city is not blocking off streets for sledding but rather borrowing street cleaning equipment so that there will not be disruption because of the weather. No snow folks have emerged on my walk. And I do not hear the sound of children enjoying and calling out, “look at this! Watch me!”
The school buses are not running, so I am fairly sure that the schools are closed. We still have power so I think the TV and computer are still available.

The new kind of quiet is actually eerie. Solemn. Poignant.

I am curious as to whether or not now “they” will attempt to develop a pill or programming to recreate that inner joy and wonder of a Snow Day?

“Be aware of wonder.
Live a balanced life
–learn some and think some
– and draw and paint and sing and dance
- and play and work every day some.”
Robert Fulgham

ZIP still has the feeling and he comes in a shiny, happy puppy covered in snowballs and barking with glee.

How do you conjure up that feeling from deep inside? How do you think folks find it today? Do you think some folks do not know what they are missing?

In 1971, a wonderful book was published by The Boston Women’s Health Cooperative and it was called Our Bodies Our Selves. It was here that I first discovered Dr. Christiane Northrup, an OB-GYN . I scurried out to purchase my own copy. No regrets here.

I shared my copy with my Mother as she did not know all those things about her body either and she could study by herself the material and not talk about it as she was taught.

I gave the book as wedding shower gifts and graduation presents to all of my friends.

I purchased several updates along the way and in December of 2010, I gave each of my daughters a copy of the new and revised edition.

In the 90’s I purchased a copy of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and am aware that a new revised edition is being published January of 2012. My copy looks ragged and worn, because I refer to it so often. I am debating whether or not to purchase the new 2012 edition…I got a new copy in 2009 as my original was just worn out.

In the early 2000s Dr. Northrup wrote a book called The Wisdom of Menopause. This book was almost too late to be helpful to me and yet I find myself still opening it up and referencing and sharing my copy with at least 25 other women. I still like to keep it right by my reading chair and look at it at least monthly or when my current physician does not have time to share adequately with me about the medications or diagnosis being made. The book is much more reliable and accurate than any other resource I have found.

Powell’s

I also own an Herbal Pharmacy and Remedy Book, in which I can look up the assistance I need for earaches and nosebleeds and indigestion in the middle of the night in order to care in the moment. This has to be a personal choice because you have to find one YOU Trust.

This is the resource where I found putting VICK’s Ointment on the soles of your feet and then cozy socks will stop you coughing for the whole night. I have shared that advice a number of times in comments and on this blog. The binding is falling apart and the pages are loose because I have counted on mine for 30 years, but it is out of date.

I have referred 5 people since the start of this year to these books. Men need to know about these books and be supportive of women’s health initiatives. Folks are starting to understand that they have to know about their own bodies and what their bodies are saying, in order to get an appropriate diagnosis and assistance from their Physician or other health care provider.

I cannot imagine going through life without having these books nearby. With Women’s healthcare so on the line in the USA and being so attacked, I cannot imagine any woman not having a copy of these books by her side.

What is your body telling you? What are the resources you use? How do you listen? How do you know if the messages are deceptive?

The Internet is a good start point, and I have found that they are just not as good as any of these sources.

No one paid me to mention or review these books. The opinions stated here are my own and come from my use and research. These books have been invaluable to me in being my Do It Yourself (DIY) healthcare representative. I like knowing that my Physician and Naturopath have these books on their shelves too. How about you?

Dr. Christiane Northrup has an e-newsletter and also Facebook

If you purchase anything from Amazon or Powell’s from this site I will receive a few beans in my bucket.
Thank you

I just love reading JD Meier’s amazing quotes posts on Sources of Insight. To me these quotes are like amazing tweets that intrigue the imagination and share wisdom on the quick. JD says organizing and arranging these quotes is similar to working in a ZEN garden for his mind. Nice concept- eh?

My Uncle John, my Mother’s younger brother, sent me a book he published for his grandchildren. It is a lovely collection of his thoughts about his life and it includes some of my family’s infamous quotes that just keep coming past my ear. It is something I miss with my Mother’s passing, because she was full of many of these herself – and her brother included some of her tweets in his book.

I thought today I would share some of this family wisdom with you, I will organize by person:

Grandfather:
-Just get at it!
-Shoot or give the gun to Eli. (Nothing to do with hunting)
-Get a move on.
-Hold your horses.
-Keep your shirt on.
-Does your train leave any minute?
-Only the very old or the very rich can afford to be eccentric. You are neither so shape up!
-Cheerful service to others is the best medicine for whatever ails you.
-Hold still – Do you have the PIP?
-He profits most who serves best.
-He who stands in the way of progress gets run over.
-Better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick
-You can’t go broke taking a profit.

Grandmother:
-Happiness comes not from doing just what one likes but from learning to like doing what one must do.
-If something is worth doing it deserves your best effort.
-Measure twice cut once
-If you will get it right the first time around you may save yourself and others considerable time, trouble, and embarrassment.
- If you would kindly move your fat, fashionable, well groomed carcass we could get some work done in this kitchen

Sister Ruth (MUM):
-If you can’t find something nice to say about someone then for heaven’s sake just be quiet-or if you must talk, then talk about the weather.
-Big minds discuss concepts; small minds discuss people. (Eleanor Roosevelt)
-When you get your priorities straight most things tend to fall into place making life both more agreeable and more productive.
- That was fair heavenly!
- Just get busy and get your work done first thing in the morning, then when a moment of pleasure comes around you can truly enjoy it
- Pick out one gift for yourself each birthday and Christmas and then you will always get just what you wanted.
- When you get paid for your work, always put something in savings first.
- In this day and age a woman must be financially independent. She must not be ignorant of her family affairs
- We do not always have to agree within the family, but the minute you step out the door you are in harmony
- Don’t make others have to tend to your mess

A number of years ago, all 5 siblings went on an Alaskan Cruise together. All the other passengers wanted to sit at their table because they were so witty and delightful. These are just the comments we remember and their ability to tell a story – amazing!

Do you remember some favorite family quotes – oft times repeated? Please share

I am asking folks if they enjoyed what they read here to please subscribe by email or RSS

Kirstin Offiler is one of those folks who sent me an email. I went to her site and found some very good writing and interesting material that was pertinent to the goals here at PW. It took us some juggling of dates but here we go – I would like to share Kirstin’s guest post with you now. Hope you will enjoy her offerings:

What is your purpose?

Your purpose is not necessarily what you do for a living, but it’s just as important. We all have a calling in this life, but we don’t always acknowledge it, honor it, and pursue it. Why? Because for some, it feels frivolous to follow a dream when there’s much more practical work to be done, like laundry, work, walking the dog, running errands, spending time with family.

Your calling is your way of serving the greater good of the world. It’s how each of us gets to our core and satisfies our pull towards that which inspires us. And like I said—your job may not be your calling. That’s ok. But here are some ways you can incorporate your purpose into your life.

Define your calling. Doesn’t it seem like some people are born with a pen or paintbrush in their hand? They understand their calling from the get-go and never waver. For others, their calling may be a tiny kernel inside that is acknowledged every so often, but never given the chance to grow. To build your life around what feels most natural and right to you, you first need to define what your calling is. Are you a writer? An advocate for the homeless? A photographer? A knitter? A fantastic listener? Ask yourself what makes you feel most like yourself. When are you the happiest? That’s your calling. That’s what you should aim for in your life.

Take small steps to incorporate it into your life. Your calling is how you leave a mark on the world, no matter how large or small. But begin by doing small-scale things to make your calling more present in your life. If you feel that writing is your path, write for 10 minutes a day until it becomes habit. If you believe you’ll be of best service teaching yoga, tutoring students, photographing weddings, building websites, or whatever—start small and let your purpose organically weave its way into your life. Trying to make drastic changes all at once can lead to burn out or just plain boredom.

Share your purpose. Tell friends and family what you hope to do with your life. Set goals for where you hope to be with your calling in a year, five years, and ten years and share it. Accountability makes it easier to stay on a path that’s true to our calling. Blog about it. Tell your coworkers. Share it—your purpose is what makes you unique, and it should be shared with the world.

Here are some affirmations you can repeat when it becomes hard to believe in your purpose or calling or when you doubt your own abilities:

I feel most like myself when I am doing __________. This is my calling and I honor it.

The easy path is ignoring my purpose. The hard path is focusing on my purpose. But the hard path yields happiness, peace, and fulfillment, so I choose that path.

My calling in life is how I am most useful to the world. I am of service when I focus on what makes me happiest.

It’s not frivolous to focus on my passion. By focusing on what lights me up, I bring more light into the world and will help others do the same.

My calling is what comes easiest and most naturally to me. I trust my gut instinct about my purpose in this world.

My job or career may be different from my calling, but both are important parts of who I am as a complete person and both deserve my passion and attention.

In short, your calling is that thing you’ve always felt you wanted to do or try. When you’re in your element and you feel like you’re doing exactly what you were made for—that’s your purpose. Tap into it. Live in that space. Share it with others because the world needs what you have to give. Your purpose is your wisdom.

A concert hall was rented, musicians hired and reception orchestrated. Several lovely dresses were purchased for the various sections of the recital. Advertising was designed and a sound team was engaged for recording. The concert was slated for May Day. But that concert was never to happen, because on Easter Sunday in early April the young woman found herself in the hospital undergoing massive surgery for kidney tumors and stones.

It was a slow and steady recovery process which cost a great deal of money. There was no running or jogging and weight lifting to keep in shape and the muscles toned – breath supported.

The Professor felt very badly and quietly cancelled all the preparations and when the young woman was released found tutoring to help her graduate on time and go on to graduate school of a different kind. He also arranged for a chapel in the woods, a comfortable stool and a reel to reel tape recorder to be set up for a small recital to be recorded. One duet partner, the Philosophy Professor, even made time to join the small group and complete the duet section. Over the last 3 weeks of school the arduous first part of the concert was recorded reel to reel as the young woman sat on the stool and the professor accompanied the vocals. The Irish and local folks songs, musical numbers and contemporary pieces were not completed.

The young woman went other directions, but when she was discouraged, she would find a way to listen to her tape and found courage again. The reel to reel tape was translated on to a small cassette. Over the next years that tape was played so many times it stretched and distorted, but it still brought comfort.

Then the cassette player gave up and there was no way to hear the music.

Last year 2011, the young woman – now much matured wished to hear her music once again. She could not find anyone to copy the cassette in its sad shape onto a CD. Then she thought of Jannie Funster the amazing poet, songwriter and recorder of Funsterland in Austin, Texas – who said yes she could figure it out….Jannie arranged, for a small fee, for her sound guru – GEORGE to take the tape and transfer it onto a CD. George not only took out some of the distortion noise but also removed some background interference – it is still in an empty church and some of the words are unclear, but it is now on CD and the woman’s MP3 and on her computer.

I listened to it on my cellphone during my last morning walk….and all the energy and feelings of accomplishment returned. All the joy of practicing, and people caring, and every effort being made to attain a goal is right there and fills my whole being. It is the best concert ever.

I am left with only the humblest of thank you’s to say aloud. It means so much to me I do not know how to thank each one of you.

Thank you!

Mr. Robinson, Jannie Funster, the Postal Service and George the Sound man.

Enclosed with this Thank you note, Please find a small piece of the concert I wish to share with you….
