A Suggestion

OffTheMap

OffTheMap

Recently we were at gathering of friends and the conversation turned to books being read and favorite movies.   OFF THE MAP starring Joan Allen, Sam Elliot, and Valentina De Angelis was suggested to us.

It is about a family who is living off the grid and is being audited by the IRS.

It was out and about in 2003, and we had never heard of it before so looked it up and had the DVD sent to our house.   It is an Independent film.   We enjoyed watching the movie.  We laughed and cried and were in suspense and ended our sojourn just delighted and pleased that we had heard of the movie and had taken the time to watch it.

We found the story meaningful and lovely.  The photography and colors in the movie were gorgeous.

If you would like to know more there is an official website but I liked the information from Wikipedia better.

This movie was nominated for a number of awards and received several Film Festival Awards.

You may already know about this film,   I just wanted to share my enjoyment with you and make a suggestion.

Have you watched a film that you just truly enjoyed?  Do you like the block buster movies the best or Independent movies?   I mostly watch documentaries, what genre do you enjoy the most?

Please suggest some movies that we might all enjoy watching.  How fun is this?

I hadn’t heard of this movie, Patricia. Thank you. I will definitely be watching this. I love Sam Elliot, too, so that’s a bonus :)

The person who recommended this movie was also a fan of Sam Elliot and that is why he chose it in the first place. Enjoy

    Hi Patricia,

Thank you for the suggestion, I already found it and waiting for it to arrive.

The ones that I would recommend:

01-“Solaris”, 1972, 169 minutes, Russian, Foreign Classic, An excellent mind exerciser! (The original Russian version, not the American one with George Clooney, which is simplified).

02-“Surrogates”, 2009, 88 minutes, Bruce Willis, It’s not a great movie, but presents a possibility of what could happen when we let technology solve our fears and desires.

03-“Children of Men”, 2006, 110 minutes, Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, It shows how war REALLY is and what discrimination and abuse of power can become.

All these movies I watched through Netflix

Those would be my two (actually three) cents :)

Thank you for the wonderful recommendation. My three all-time favorite movies are:

    1. Out of Africa
    2. The English Patient
    3. Man from Snowy River (the first one, not the sequel)

The cinematography and musical scores in each of these movies is breathtaking.

    Laurie,
You are welcome and thank you for stopping by – I think I will put your 3 on my list to re-watch them – I remember the beauty of these films

  7. Evelyn Lim Says:

I have not heard of this show. I’d be interested to check it out!

Recently, my husband and I are preferring to watch comedies to anything violent or shocking. We like being able to take our minds off and simply just sit back and laugh!

We have just watched a movie last night…”The Morning Glory”….very funny!

    Evelyn,
sorry I missed your comment earlier, but have now gotten it up and running.

I will add Morning Glory to my list – sounds great – although we have a problem with wild morning glory vines taking over our yard!

I know I think there is enough violence in the world…I like to relax and sit back when I watch a film
    This one was transporting

Hi Patricia .. sounds a really interesting film .. I’m lucky we have an excellent film society – so they show films for us – excellent avant garde ones .. just seen “Seraphine” – all about an artist way ahead of her time .. 1900s .. see Wikipedia for the review .. brilliant acting .. and this past week we saw London River .. again see Wiki .. brilliant acting here too .. Brenda Blethyn .. but the show was stolen by the actor Sotigui Kouyate .. again just very good acting and putting a different perspective on life, after the London bombings in 2005.

    Cheers – Hilary
